Facet Joint Syndrome

Facet joint syndrome is a condition in which the facet joints become inflamed and cause pain.

Facet joint syndrome is most commonly caused by arthritis of the facet joints or trauma to the facet joints.

How Can It Be Treated?

Treatment of the facet joints starts with conservative management including physical therapy and medication management. If the pain persists, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the medial branch nerves that innervate the facet joints is the treatment of choice. If RFA fails to provide relief, your physician may consider referral to a neurosurgeon or spinal cord stimulation as another treatment option.
