    Trigger Point Injections

    What is it?

A trigger point injection can help soothe myofascial pain, especially in your neck, shoulder, arms, legs and lower back.  Trigger points are painful “knots” in your muscles that can be very sensitive to touch/pressure. They may form after acute or chronic trauma leading to stress on muscle fibers, which can become tight and painful. Fibromyalgia and migraines are examples of conditions that can be treated with trigger point injections. Trigger point injections commonly involve injections of local anesthetic, either with or without corticosteroid. The physician doing the injections can use an ultrasound probe to guide the needle towards the muscles and tendons causing you pain. In some cases, more than one set of trigger point injections could be needed to adequately decrease your pain, or even multiple injections in a single muscle group for long-lasting pain relief.
